Coffee Filter Color Mixing Activity for Kids

Watch washable marker colors spread across a damp paper filter. Some colors may separate into unexpected shades, giving children a reason to look closely and compare results. This is a small observation activity rather than a recipe for a perfect picture, so enjoy the unpredictable patterns.

◷ 25 minutes♧ 5–12 years

Let’s make it happen

  1. Place a white coffee filter on a washable tray.
  2. Draw several dots with washable water-based markers.
  3. Add a few drops of water with a wet fingertip while an adult supervises.
  4. Watch the colors spread, compare shades and leave the filter to dry.

Grown-up note: Supervise play, check materials for age suitability and keep small parts away from younger children. Adapt the activity to your child’s abilities.
