Indoor Map Making Activity for Kids
Look at a familiar room as if you were a mapmaker seeing it from above. Children decide how to represent furniture, add a simple key and mark a safe route to an imaginary treasure. Accuracy is optional; the interesting part is explaining how the drawing connects to real places.
Let’s make it happen
- Sketch the room as a large rectangle.
- Add simple shapes for a few major pieces of furniture.
- Create a key with symbols for a door, chair and treasure.
- Give the map to a partner and explain a safe route without climbing.
Grown-up note: Supervise play, check materials for age suitability and keep small parts away from younger children. Adapt the activity to your child’s abilities.
